MUSCAT : Oman is showcasing its deep historical roots with a renewed focus on archaeological tourism, particularly in Dhofar Governorate. This region is becoming a key attraction for tourists interested in exploring the remnants of ancient civilizations and vibrant cultural history.

Dhofar’s archaeological sites, including Samharam, Al Baleed, Shisr, and Khor Rori, serve as open-air museums, revealing the ingenuity and heritage of past civilizations. These sites, alongside historical shrines and traditional architecture, are drawing increasing interest from local and international visitors. The area’s rich historical narrative is complemented by its natural beauty, with picturesque landscapes enhancing the travel experience.

Dr Salem bin Suhail Al Kathiri, a media professional passionate about archaeological tourism, highlights that the region’s historical and cultural assets are significant tourist attractions. He notes that archaeological tourism enriches the local economy and creates job opportunities in areas such as tourism guiding hospitality, and traditional crafts. Furthermore, the revenue generated from tourism helps fund the preservation and restoration of these vital historical sites.

Economic analyst Khalfan bin Saif Al-Tuqi underscores that heritage tourism is a crucial economic driver for many countries. With its unique combination of landscapes and historical sites, Oman is well-positioned to compete with major tourist destinations. The Sultanate’s diverse attractions, from its golden deserts to its clean beaches and ancient forts, offer a compelling reason for tourists to visit year-round.

Dr. Ashraf Musharraf, Head of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chair for Economic Studies, emphasizes the sector’s role in achieving Oman Vision 2040. The tourism strategy aims to contribute significantly to the national economy by attracting millions of tourists and creating new job opportunities. Developing sustainable tourism, including leveraging seasonal attractions like Dhofar’s autumn season, is key to maximizing economic benefits.

Dr Mashraf believes that the development of this vital sector depends on the ability to implement an ambitious investment strategy that raises the tourism sector’s contribution to 10% of the GDP and attracts approximately 6 million tourists over the next ten years.

Dr. Mohammed bin Awad Al-Mishkhi, an expert in public opinion, advocates for the ongoing development and promotion of Oman’s archaeological map. He suggests that well-organized marketing campaigns can enhance the appeal of Dhofar’s historical and cultural sites, attracting researchers and history enthusiasts alike.

Social media influencer Mubarak bin Salem Al-Maashani adds that promoting Oman’s rich history and hospitality through modern media can significantly boost tourism in today’s globalized world. He encourages leveraging digital platforms to showcase the country’s unique heritage and allure.
