MUSCAT : The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources at a total cost of RO 23 million.
With a storage capacity of 16 million cubic metres of water, the dam project covers a water catchment area of 87 square kilometres.

The project is part of the Ministry’s endeavour to implement a flood protection system in the Wilayat of Salalah, including two dams under construction, namely Adonab and Aanar. These dams will hold back rainwater and floods coming from the mountains and heading to the Port of Salalah, the Industrial City of Raysut and the Salalah Free Zone.

Engineer Ali bin Bakhit Bait Saeed, Director of the Water Resources Department at the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate, in a statement to the Oman News Agency, stated that the project includes the construction of a dam on the course of Wadi Aanar in the Raysut area in the Wilayat of Salalah with a length of 1,680 km and a height of 20 meters, in addition to the construction of a water drainage channel to empty the dam lake.
He explained that the project includes the construction of a 430-meter-long concrete spillway, in addition to installing a set of monitoring devices to measure groundwater levels as well as the water level in the lake.
Additionally, the lateral protection of Salalah Port includes the construction of a concrete wall extending for a distance of 1,610 kilometers with a height ranging between two and four meters. This will protect the port from Wadi Adonab water and direct it to the sea.
It is noteworthy that the protection system in the Wilayat of Salalah will provide the highest levels of protection from flood risks after completion, in addition to reducing sediments arriving at the Port of Salalah by up to 70 percent.
