MUSCAT : The working group, led by Dr Ahmed bin Saeed Al Shukaili, Assistant Attorney General and team head, convened today to tackle the critical task of drafting initial reports on Oman’s compliance with two significant international conventions. This meeting focused on aligning national legislation with the provisions of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Participants reviewed the effectiveness of existing national laws, discussed implementation mechanisms, and assessed the roles of various state and civil society institutions. They addressed the challenges and proposed solutions to enhance compliance with these agreements. The discussion also covered how to handle reports and complaints, the role of human rights committees, and the need for improved education and training on human rights.

The meeting underscored the importance of ongoing cooperation between state institutions and civil society to elevate human rights standards in Oman. This initiative follows Oman’s accession to the conventions under Royal Decrees No. (44/2020) and No. (45/2020), marking a significant step in fulfilling international obligations.

Additionally, the working group deliberated on integrating international best practices into national frameworks and reviewed the progress of previous reports. The group, which includes representatives from key government departments and human rights organizations, is tasked with ensuring comprehensive, high-quality reports reflecting Oman’s commitment to these international standards.
