Muscat: Oman has witnessed a significant uptick in HIV infections, with 221 new cases reported in 2023—an increase of 10% from the previous year. The Ministry of Health’s annual report reveals that males account for 75.6% of these cases. The total number of Omanis living with HIV by the end of 2023 stands at 2,339, with 28 reported deaths due to the virus.
The report underscores that the age group 25-49 represents the highest number of new cases, including 167 males and 54 females. Alarmingly, one case was recorded in the 0-4 age group. The year 2023 has seen the highest number of HIV cases since the first case was documented in 1984, surpassing previous highs.
Geographically, Muscat has the highest number of people living with HIV, at 717, with 596 receiving treatment. Other regions, including Dhofar, Musandam, and Al Buraimi, also report significant numbers with varying levels of treatment coverage. In total, 1,849 of the 2,339 individuals with HIV are receiving treatment.

The report attributes the increase in cases to several factors:
- A gradual reduction in stigma surrounding HIV due to enhanced community education.
- Improved confidentiality protocols and access to effective treatments.
- Increased early testing and detection, particularly among health workers and pregnant women.
- Persistent risky behaviours, such as unprotected sex.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of regular testing and treatment for those living with HIV, urging individuals to undergo evaluations at least once a year. Despite efforts, the percentage of people who received these tests in 2022 was around 86%.
