PARIS: Neeraj Chopra, India’s golden boy of athletics, has made a booming start in his quest to defend his javelin title at the Paris Olympics 2024. On Tuesday, Chopra launched an impressive throw of 89.34 meters in the qualification round, topping Group B and securing his spot in the men’s javelin final.

Chopra’s stellar throw not only led his group but also marked his personal best in recent times, showcasing his formidable skills as he aims for back-to-back Olympic glory. His performance comes on the heels of a season-best 88.36 meters at the Doha Diamond League and a record-setting 89.94 meters at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.

In contrast, fellow Indian javelin thrower Kishore Jena faced a tough outing. Jena, who competed in Group A, did not advance past the qualification round. Despite his earlier qualification with an 87.54-meter throw at the Asian Games, Jena struggled to surpass the 87-meter mark in Paris.

Chopra’s path to the gold medal now involves stiff competition from top rivals, including Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch, Germany’s Julian Weber, former world champion Anderson Peters, and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.
