MUSCAT : This rare infection, known for its diagnostic challenges, was addressed with advanced laparoscopic techniques, showcasing the hospital’s expertise in handling complex cases.

Dr. Al Warith bin Ahmed Al Hashmi, Consultant in Liver and Pancreas Transplantation and Surgery at the Royal Hospital, explained to Oman News Agency that diagnosing fasciola hepatica presents significant challenges due to its symptoms being similar to other digestive system diseases. Accurate diagnosis requires a high level of experience and the use of sophisticated diagnostic methods, including advanced radiological imaging and laboratory tests.

Fasciola hepatica infection typically results from consuming plants contaminated with the larvae, leading to both acute and chronic inflammation of the liver and gallbladder. The primary treatment involves anti-parasitic medications and, in advanced cases, surgery.

Dr. Al Hashmi noted that procuring the drug ‘triclabendazole’, essential for treating fasciola hepatica, is another challenge due to its limited availability in many countries. The Ministry of Health has played a crucial role in ensuring that appropriate treatment is available for affected patients.

The laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, was performed to minimize complications associated with traditional surgery. This approach not only reduced the patient’s recovery time but also allowed for a quicker return to normal activities with less pain. Dr. Al Hashmi emphasized that the successful use of laparoscopic technology in such delicate operations reflects the Royal Hospital’s commitment to advancing its health services and adopting the latest medical developments.
