MUSCAT : With visitor numbers doubling annually, the region is witnessing a surge in hotel construction, tourist resorts, and the development of heritage and archaeological sites.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in cooperation with various tourism sector partners and hotel establishments in Dhofar Governorate, has made extensive efforts to ensure the readiness of these establishments and the quality of services they provide.

Khalid bin Abdullah Al Abri, Director General of the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, confirmed that five tourism projects will be launched this year. This will increase the number of hotel rooms to 7,000, with 70 licensed establishments in the governorate.

Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the ‘Museum of the Land of Frankincense’ will host three specialized exhibitions during the Dhofar Khareef Season this year, enhancing the tourist experience. The Ministry is also collaborating with various governmental and private agencies to hold numerous exhibitions and conferences, boosting the conference and incentive tourism sector.

It has implemented a promotional campaign for Dhofar Governorate, which includes hosting representatives from the content industry to promote the Dhofar Khareef Season 2024 and future seasons. The campaign also targets Gulf markets to attract more tourists.

It is pertinent to note that the tourism sector experienced an 18-20 percent growth last year, indicating a positive economic impact on the region. The Ministry has developed several tourist sites in Dhofar, including Al Baleed Beach and the ‘Al Damar Oasis’ in the Wilayat of Mirbat.

Hotel occupancy rates in Dhofar Governorate have increased compared to last year, with expectations of further growth during the peak season in August. Promotional programs for Dhofar Governorate are expected to attract more tourists, especially from Gulf markets. Tourist sites in Dhofar are ready and fully serviced for the Dhofar Khareef season 2024.

The Ministry has ambitious plans to promote Dhofar as a sustainable tourist destination throughout the year. Projects include developing the ‘Land of Frankincense’ sites, updating the story at the Land of Frankincense Museum, operating the Jabal Samhan public breathing space, and establishing a visitor center in the Wadi Dokah Reserve.

The tourism strategy for Dhofar Governorate aims to attract 3 million visitors in four large tourist complexes. The outputs of tourism development and land allocation are ready for investors, with more than 18 tourist lands assigned with usufruct contracts or under negotiation.
