Oman bans cosmetics containing Methyl N-Methylanthranilate

H.E. Salim bin Ali Al Hakmani, CPA Chairman, has issued Decision No. 579/2024 to prohibit the circulation of cosmetics and personal care products containing Methyl N-Methylanthranilate (MNM) beyond specified limits.

Muscat – The decision stipulates that it is prohibited to circulate cosmetics and personal care products that contain higher than the permitted percentages of the substance MNM.

The decision prohibits circulation of sunscreen products containing any amount of MNM. For non-rinsable cosmetics and personal care products, the MNM content is capped at 0.1 percent, while for rinsable products, the limit is set at 0.2 percent.

Violators of the decision face administrative fines of up to RO 1,000 for the first offense, which is doubled for repeat violations. Continued violations can result in daily fines of up to RO 50, with a maximum total of RO 2,000.
