MUSCAT : The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Development Laboratory (RIDL) and Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) have introduced a pioneering robot that automates the cleaning of solar cells, marking a significant advancement in renewable energy technology. This local innovation aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of solar power plants by ensuring optimal performance with minimal human intervention.
Abdulrahman bin Affan Al-Hajji, Chairman of RIDL, highlighted that the solar cell cleaning robot is a unique creation designed and manufactured in Oman. The robot is engineered to clean extensive solar cell arrays with high precision, significantly improving the performance and longevity of solar power stations.
“The robot is designed to reduce human effort and the risks associated with manual cleaning operations,” Al-Hajji explained.

The robot is powered by solar energy and utilizes advanced sensors and automation systems to perform cleaning tasks. It can handle both dry and wet dirt and optimize its performance across various conditions. Test results from Oman Oil Development Company demonstrated the robot’s effectiveness, cleaning over 700 solar panels and performing reliably in all weather conditions.
This innovative technology minimizes water usage compared to traditional cleaning methods and boosts solar energy productivity. By reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources, the robot is crucial in advancing environmental sustainability and promoting renewable energy in the region.
