GENEVA: At the Second Preparatory Committee for the Eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) 2026, held at the United Nations in Geneva, Oman’s Permanent Delegation highlighted the nation’s dedication to the treaty’s three core pillars: nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

His Excellency Ambassador Idris bin Abdulrahman Al-Khanjari, Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations and International Organizations, emphasized the significance of the voluntary accession of all Arab countries to the treaty and their commitment to the comprehensive safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This, he stated, underscores their genuine intent to adhere to international non-proliferation norms.

Ambassador Al-Khanjari affirmed Oman’s support for the statements of the Arab Group and the Non-Aligned Movement, expressing appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs. He highlighted the critical need to address the stagnation in the treaty’s implementation, especially following the failure of the last two review conferences to adopt a consensus final document.

He pointed out that Article 6 of the NPT obliges nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals, while non-nuclear states refrain from seeking them. The Ambassador criticized the slow progress and the manipulation of interpretations that undermine the treaty’s credibility and sustainability.

Oman also stressed the inalienable right of NPT member states to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, calling for adequate financial resources to support the IAEA’s technical cooperation program. The Ambassador highlighted the urgent need for collective international responsibility to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction, condemning Israel’s threats to use nuclear weapons and calling for its immediate adherence to the NPT.

Ambassador Al-Khanjari further advocated for a legally binding international instrument to assure non-nuclear states against the use or threat of nuclear weapons. He emphasized that the possession of nuclear weapons by NPT states parties is temporary and that nuclear-armed states must commit to disarmament through clear timelines, measurable goals, and greater transparency.

The Ambassador reiterated Oman’s belief that the complete elimination of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction is the only way to spare humanity from their horrors. He called for genuine international cooperation and adherence to multilateral agreements to achieve sustainable global peace and security.
