Muscat – In a recent interview with AeroTime, a global multi-channel aviation digital hub and professional providing news, events and advisory services to the aviation world, Con Korfiatis, the newly appointed CEO of Oman Air, outlined a fresh vision for the airline.
Korfiatis, who joined Oman Air in May 2024, is leading the company’s turnaround strategy. The plan focuses on rightsizing operations and improving efficiency across the board. While the airline has eight new aircraft deliveries expected in the next year due to existing orders, Korfiatis emphasizes a ‘measured’ approach.
“Don’t expect any new aircraft orders, not in the next six months or 12 months at least,” he told AeroTime.
“We’ve got to focus on our transformation and on fixing our foundations. There’s nothing we want to get in the way of that. We will look at the product going forward, over the next six months. Whether there’s anything that comes out of that, we’ll see,” he explained.
The urgency for improvement stems from significant financial challenges. However, despite the financial pressure, some new aircraft will join the fleet. Three Boeing 787s and three Boeing 737 MAX jets are expected to arrive this year, with two more MAX deliveries planned for early 2025. However, the future of the existing 787-8 fleet remains under review.
Korfiatis is also optimistic about Oman’s potential to become a major tourist destination. He highlighted the country’s diverse attractions and the efforts to build tourism infrastructure. “Oman has a strong untapped potential for tourism. We are building hotels, airports, and other tourism assets to make the country more accessible and attractive to visitors,” he said.
Korfiatis emphasized the importance of building awareness about Oman as a destination. “Our goal is to make more people aware of Oman and its offerings. The whole tourism ecosystem in Oman is working towards this, and Oman Air will play a key role in this vision,” he added.
