Muscat – The podcast, which focuses on the Blue Economy, also featured Zakariya Al Hasni of Simak Seafood Company.
Dr. Al Riyami revealed that Oman produces almost 80 percent of the fish catch in the GCC, emphasizing the significance of fisheries as a critical natural resource for the country. She noted that many Omanis are unaware that fish is the second-largest natural resource in Oman, underscoring the importance of the Blue Economy from a local perspective.
The latest episode of Tejarah Talks, organized by the Oman Business Forum in association with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, delved into how Oman’s fisheries are driving sustainable growth. Dr. Al Riyami explained that Oman’s position as the top fish producer in the GCC not only highlights the resource’s value but also its potential for boosting in-country value (ICV).
In 2022, the OIA established a dedicated ICV department to enhance local economic contributions. This department has set guidelines, regulations, and governance standards to ensure all companies under the OIA, totaling over 160, adhere to ICV principles. Recent evaluations and key performance indicators (KPIs) demonstrate significant progress in this area.
Dr. Al Riyami also announced an increase in company spending on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 11 percent to 17 percent, reflecting a substantial investment in local supply chains. This effort aims to encourage greater SME involvement in the fisheries sector and beyond.
Besides, the Fisheries Development Oman (FDO) was recently recognized for its outstanding contribution to ICV among all OIA companies. Dr. Al Riyami emphasized the collaborative nature of the fisheries sector, highlighting the importance of close cooperation with SMEs, suppliers, and fishermen to foster business growth and community development.
