Muscat: Positive Vision Association is proud to join the global community in observing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day. This year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention,” underscores the critical need for evidence-based approaches to address the global drug problem.
Mrs. Nashia Nasib, President of Positive Vision Association stated “Our efforts this year are focused on raising awareness within our community about the dangers of drugs and other psychotropic substances. We are working towards the establishment of a dedicated hotline in partnership with Omantel aimed at addressing issues related to HIV/AIDS and substance use, targeting the community at large with a focus on youth. We recognize the need for accessible support and dissemination of the correct information within the community, especially for young people on HIV/AIDS and substance abuse.
Additionally, this year we aim to conduct Training of Trainers in Peer Education in the fields of substance abuse and addiction prevention and HIV, as such interventions will increase youth knowledge. We believe that by equipping our community with the right knowledge and resources, we can foster a healthier and safer environment for all.”

The global drug problem affects millions, from individuals struggling with substance use disorders to communities impacted by drug trafficking and organized crime. This year’s World Drug Day campaign emphasizes the importance of scientific, evidence-based prevention strategies that respect human rights and promote health and well-being.
Positive Vision Association’s mission aligns closely with these principles. “We aim to:
– Raise awareness: We are committed to increasing understanding of the effectiveness of evidence-based prevention strategies, highlighting their role in mitigating the harms associated with drug use.
– Advocate for investment: We encourage greater investment in prevention efforts by governments and policymakers, emphasizing the long-term benefits of early intervention.
– Empower communities: We provide communities with the tools and resources needed to implement effective prevention initiatives, fostering resilience against drug use.
– Facilitate dialogue and collaboration: We promote collaboration between stakeholders to enhance evidence-based prevention practices and policies.
– Promote evidence-based policymaking: We advocate for policies grounded in scientific research and best practices at both national and international levels.
– Engage communities: We stress the importance of community participation in designing and implementing effective drug prevention programs.
– Empower youth: We equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources to become agents of change in their communities.
- Promote international cooperation: We foster cooperation among governments, organizations, and communities to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
- People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention, said Mrs. Nasib. “Many people who use drugs face significant stigma and discrimination, which can prevent them from seeking the help they need. Our association is dedicated to reducing stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV, drug users, and recovering addicts, while extending support to their families and the community.”
Throughout 2024, Positive Vision Association will be actively engaging in activities aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and other psychotropic substances. These initiatives will focus on educational campaigns, community outreach programs, and collaborations with local and international partners to foster a positive vision within Omani society.
