Muscat: This annual event emphasizes the vital role of oceans in the health of our planet and future while highlighting the need to address growing threats such as climate change, pollution, and overfishing.

This year’s celebration aims to heighten public awareness about the impact of human activities on oceans, foster global efforts for ocean conservation, and rally people worldwide in support of sustainable ocean management.

Oman’s Environment Authority has proactively developed programs to safeguard the marine environment. One key initiative is an annual project to monitor marine pollutants. Stations along the coast, from Musandam to Dhofar, collect water and sediment samples to measure levels of heavy metals and hydrocarbons, providing crucial data on marine pollution, especially in sensitive areas like industrial ports.

Additionally, the Authority has undertaken several projects to conserve marine natural resources. These include studying the success rate of Al-Riman turtle nests on Masirah Island beaches in collaboration with international organizations, to pinpoint critical nesting sites and factors affecting nesting and hatching success. Furthermore, efforts are also underway to track the Arabian Sea humpback whale, an endangered species.

The Environment Authority also focuses on enacting and enforcing laws to protect the marine environment. Through the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control and Natural Reserves Law, Oman ensures that companies adhere to strict regulations on liquid waste discharge.
