Oman to discuss minimum wage hike, periodic bonuses

MUSCAT : During a statement to the media at a field programme introducing the Social Protection Law and Labour Code provisions, Al Battashi underscored the need to consider specific standards and indicators when addressing the minimum wage, cautioning against reliance on information circulating on social media platforms.

He emphasized a data-driven approach to raising the minimum wage, pointing out that social media discussions alone won’t determine the new amount. He highlighted the need for careful considerations when discussions topics such as minimum wage and periodic bonus, urging a careful approach to their determination.

Al Battashi elaborated that raising the minimum wage requires a thorough examination of references and indicators to establish a reasonable figure capable of withstanding economic challenges in the future. He noted that discussions on this matter are ongoing within the Dialogue Committee, with plans for meetings to finalize a specific figure to present to the Council of Ministers.

Regarding the periodic bonus, Al Battashi clarified that the authority to regulate it lies with the Minister of Labour, as per the Royal Decree. He emphasized that while adjustments or new tools may be introduced, no changes have been made thus far.

Addressing challenges related to the implementation of labour laws, he stressed on the need for clarity in certain articles to resolve conflicts among production parties. He noted the importance of workshops like the ongoing field program, which aims to introduce and clarify the benefits of labour and social protection laws to various segments of society.

The field programme, targeting trade unions and human resources representatives, is set to continue from April 14 to 21.
