Muscat – The GFOW’s annual report revealed that termination of employment contracts and non-payment of wages was the most frequent complaints received in 2023. The report highlighted various labour demands, complaints, and violations, shedding light on prevalent issues faced by workers in the Sultanate of Oman.
Among the grievances outlined by the GFOW, unilateral termination of employment contracts by employers without legal justification emerged as a significant concern. Additionally, termination of contracts due to the conclusion of projects or bankruptcy of establishments, as well as the transfer of Omani workers to different work sites without proper contractual arrangements, were specified.
It also indicated that late or unpaid wages were a significant source of concern for workers, indicating potential violations of Omani labour laws.
The report also indicated that the impact of the global economic crisis, aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to be felt in certain sectors, particularly those affected by the completion of business projects. Moreover, it emphasized instances where establishments failed to adhere to safety standards, putting employees at risk in the workplace.
