Tamil Nadu: Manjummel Boys is a story about friends who faced an unsurpassable challenge of nature and lived to tell the tale. A terrain not conquered by humans and left vastly unexplored, the ‘Devil’s Kitchen’ or the ‘Guna Caves’ has become a topic of discussion.

Here’s all you need to know about these mysterious caves.

Nestled at 2,200 meters, the Guna Caves beckon with tales of mystery and movie lore, drawing adventurers and film buffs alike. Formerly known as the ‘Devil’s Kitchen,’ this site gained its new moniker after featuring in the 1992 Tamil blockbuster “Guna.”

Located just 10 kilometres from Kodaikanal on the Moir Point Road, these caves offer a fascinating journey through pine forests. While safety regulations prevent entry into the caves, their allure is visible from a safe distance amidst the scenic backdrop of Shola trees and twisted roots, creating an aura of intrigue.

Historically, American explorer Mr. B. S. Ward stumbled upon this site in 1821, and Hindu mythology intertwines with tales of the Pandavas cooking meals within these caverns. However, the cinematic magic of “Guna” propelled Guna Caves into the spotlight, attracting crowds of visitors.

The unique formation, nestled between Pillar Rocks and adorned with Shola trees, adds to the place’s charm. Although once a hidden gem, the caves gained popularity after the movie’s release, leading to an influx of tourists and environmental challenges.

Today, access to the inner chambers is restricted due to safety concerns, but tourists can still marvel at the exterior and picturesque surroundings. The best times to visit are April to June and August to September when the weather is most favourable.

Guna Caves encapsulates a blend of history, mythology, and cinematic allure, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking adventure and a touch of magic in the heart of Kodaikanal.
