Muscat: This commitment was reiterated during the participation of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Social Development, in the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City. Led by Her Excellency Laila bint Ahmed bin Awadh Al Najar, Minister of Social Development, the Omani delegation emphasized the nation’s strides towards justice, equality, and women’s empowerment.

Her Excellency Dr. Al-Najar highlighted Oman’s legislative framework, underscoring justice, equality, and non-discrimination between genders. She emphasized that national laws and policies align with human rights standards, particularly women’s rights, ensuring equitable access to social benefits and protections. Notably, women’s enrollment in social benefits stands at 49.4%, reflecting Oman’s commitment to inclusivity.

Regarding labour rights, Oman’s laws comply with international standards, offering privileges such as extended maternity and paternity leave to promote family well-being. Moreover, women’s economic participation has seen a significant uptick, with a 32% increase in workforce participation and 26% representation in the government sector.

The Sultanate has also prioritized women’s entrepreneurship, with initiatives like the Riyada program witnessing a 32% increase in female registration. Efforts to support rural and coastal women, particularly in agriculture and fisheries, have been underscored, aiming to enhance their role in economic and social development.

Her Excellency Dr. Al-Najar emphasized decentralization in project management, empowering rural women in decision-making and fostering entrepreneurship.
