Over 150 begging cases recorded in Oman in 2023: Minister

Addressing the annual media gathering, the Minister of Social Development said 17 cases were referred to Royal Oman Police.

MUSCAT: A total of 156 cases of begging were recorded in the country in 2023, the Minister of Social Development said on Thursday.

Addressing the annual media gathering, Her Excellency Laija Al Najjar said 17 cases were referred to Royal Oman Police, 13 cases were referred for social research and 126 cases were released on recognizance.

“The Ministry implemented 2,202 campaigns to combat begging during the year 2023, resulting in the arrest of 156 people. We also organised a number of media campaigns to reduce the phenomenon of bullying among children and combat violence against women,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Minister said more than RO 100 million were disbursed for social security cases from 1984 until 2023, while financial aid were provided to more than 82,000 social security and low-income people in 2023.
