With the rising trends in the corporate world, the requirements of skills and job profiles are changing rapidly. And with artificial intelligence added to the mix, there’s a lot of doubt and fear creeping into the corporate sector.

According to a recent report by Emeritus on global workplace skills with a sample size of over 6000 professionals, tech-driven skill gaps were becoming a global issue. This crucial revelation extends beyond entry-level professionals, reaching mid-career and senior executives alike.

The demand for upskilling on technology-driven skill gaps is increasingly pronounced across various career stages. Notably, at the executive level, the surge in demand for Chief Digital Officers underscores the pervasive influence of digital transformation across industries.

According to Gartner’s IT spending forecast data, global IT spending is projected to grow by 4.3% in 2023. The surge in IT projects and digitization efforts reflects a shift from customer-facing initiatives to internal optimization. This evolving landscape places a premium on leadership expertise, necessitating the navigation of complex digital transformation roadmaps.

With AI in the picture, most skills required for complex backend operations are at risk, as over the past few months, software developers and tech enthusiasts have uploaded videos of writing code with the help of ChatGPT. If we consider the above points, customer-based/communication-driven skills could also be threatened, with AI taking over these responsibilities in many sectors.

However, it’s not all dark and gloomy if you are looking out to make a call on your career. In a 2022 study, the glaring deficit of skilled cybersecurity professionals on a global scale underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions. Organizations are increasingly turning to AI to fortify their defenses against cyber threats, automating detection and response mechanisms.

Beyond cybersecurity, the potential of AI to optimize and expedite training programs is gaining traction. The U.K.’s National Health Service is at the forefront, exploring AI applications to streamline the onboarding process for healthcare professionals, providing a timely response to the workforce shortage in the sector. As technological innovation accelerates, the demand for enhanced training and reskilling initiatives intensifies. Perhaps the most proactive way to move forward would be to exercise awareness to the evolving trends and pick up on gaps within the various sectors that can harness the power of tech while requiring the human touch to redefine ‘perfection’.
