QATAR : Qatar’s former Finance Minister, Ali Sherif al-Emadi, is on the brink of a legal reckoning as he prepares to face a criminal trial following his arrest in May 2021 on embezzlement charges.

The Qatar News Agency (QNA) released a statement on Sunday, confirming the impending trial and shedding light on the nature of the charges.

The QNA report stated, “Since evidence extracted from the case documents proved that the accused committed the crimes ascribed to them, the Attorney General issued an order to refer the accused to the Criminal Court to punish them for the crimes ascribed to them, which included bribery, appropriation of public money, abuse of office, abuse of power, damage to public money and money laundering.”

While the report detailed the array of charges, it remained silent on how much money the former minister is accused of embezzling.

Ali Sherif al-Emadi, once a prominent figure in Qatar’s political and financial landscape, rose to prominence during the ascension of the current emir and played a pivotal role in transforming Qatar National Bank into the largest lender in the Middle East. Holding positions such as chairman of the bank, board member of Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, and president of the executive board of Qatar Airways, al-Emadi wielded considerable influence in the Gulf Arab emirate.

As clarified by Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, the investigation is specifically related to al-Emadi’s role as finance minister and not connected to his responsibilities at the sovereign fund or the bank.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Ali Sherif al-Emadi has yet to make any public statements regarding the case, leaving many questions unanswered as the legal proceedings unfold.
