LONDON : Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who has reigned for 52 years, announced surprise abdication live on TV in new year address.
In a stunning televised address to the nation, the Queen, 83, said she will hand over her position to her eldest son. “I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024–52 years after I succeeded my beloved father–I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik,” she said.
