One killed, over 30 injured after multiple explosions rock prayer meeting in India

At least one person died, and several others were injured after multiple explosions rocked a prayer meeting in the Kalamassery area of Kerala's Kochi on Sunday morning.

KOCHI: One person died and more than 30 were injured after multiple explosions took place at a prayer meeting of a Christian group Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Kalamassery area of Kerala’s Kochi on Sunday morning, police said.

Kalamassery CI Vibin Das said the first explosion took place around 9am and multiple blasts followed thereafter, over the next one hour. Sunday was the last day of the three-day convention which started on October 27. According to officials, more than 2,000 people were attending the meeting when the blasts took place.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday to assess the situation in the aftermath of the explosion and also directed teams from the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA to aid the state government for investigation into the blast.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident. We are collecting details regarding the incident. All top officials are there in Ernakulam. DGP is moving to the spot. We are taking it very seriously. I have spoken to DGP. We need to get more details after the investigation,” Chief Minister Vijayan added.
