MUSCAT : Oman’s application will be reviewed by the Office of the International Accreditation Commission in October 2023 so that the same application could be considered for endorsement by next March.
Sheikh Abdullah Shuwain Al Hosni, Chairman of OHRC, stated that the approval of Oman’s application is bound with the country’s ratification of basic (human rights) agreements and its commitment to Paris Principles (principles pertaining to the status of national human rights institutions).
He further pointed out that the recent Royal decree granting new powers to OHRC constitutes a solid step forward towards obtaining the desired ‘A’ classification. The powers include giving OHRC complete autonomy in electing a chair and deputy chair, besides excluding government representatives in the commission from voting on the commission’s decisions.

Oman has ratified seven international human rights conventions. This consolidates the role of OHRC and enhances its request for obtaining Class ‘A’ within the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions. It also reiterates Oman’s commitment to international human rights conventions.
