MUSCAT : As per the 2022 data of the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the strategies adopted by the Ministry of Education, including special exercises and campaigns to achieve literacy programmes, led to a decline in the country’s illiteracy rate. It has dropped to 2.60 among the 15 years and above age group.
The data also revealed that the number of teachers working in literacy centres in various governorates of the country, during the academic year 2022-2023, stood at 8,631; the number of adults enrolled in literacy programmes, in the same academic year, was 2,623.
The Sultanate of Oman aims, under the objective of the Arab Decade, to be free of illiteracy by the end of 2024.

As part of International Literacy Day, Oman, represented by the Education Ministry, will throw the spotlight on its projects and programmes to eradicate illiteracy.
This year, the International Literacy Day will be celebrated under the theme ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.’
The Ministry of Education is focused on eradicating illiteracy among the age group of 15 to 44 years during this decade – statistics shows that illiteracy in this age group reached 0.44%, compared to the percentage for the same category in the year 2015.
