MUSCAT – The Court of First Instance in Rustaq recently issued a judicial ruling against a commercial establishment specialized in selling and manufacturing furniture, for violating the Consumer Protection Law promulgated by Royal Decree No. 66/2014. The court convicted the establishment of non-compliance with providing the service properly and in accordance with its nature.

The Consumer Protection Department in South Al Batinah Governorate- Rustaq has received a complaint from a consumer who stated that he had agreed with an employee working in a commercial establishment to manufacture sofa sets and tables. He alleged that the establishment did not commit to providing the service within the agreed period. Accordingly, the consumer submitted his complaint to the Consumer Protection Department in Al Batinah South Governorate, which initiated the procedures.

The necessary measures were taken and then the file was referred to the competent court. The Court ruled in absentia to convict the first accused of committing a misdemeanor of non-compliance with providing the service properly and not guaranteeing it within a period of time commensurate with its nature. The Court punished the first accused with a fine of OMR 100.
