Muscat: Oman is currently witnessing the phenomenon of the Perseids meteor showers, which will continue until August 24.
Ashwaq bint Nasser al-Siyabiya, a member of the Executive Committee of the Oman Astronomical Society, explained that the Perseids meteor shower is caused when the Earth passes near meteorites left behind by a comet (Swift Turtle) resulting in the entry of dust grains into the Earth’s atmosphere, which burn during their entry, resulting in a bright streak of light at a speed of about 72 kilometers per second, at an altitude of approximately 70 to 100 kilometers.
