MUSCAT – The ROP, in a statement issued online, announced that it has been monitoring a new fraud practice, and warned people against falling prey to such fraudsters. The fraud, as monitored, is carried out by sending emails, SMS, instant messages, or even through WhatsApp, with scammers claiming to represent well known companies, financial institutions, or even individuals aspiring for assistance. The objective of these messages is to tempt individuals into revealing sensitive information such as bank account details, passwords, or other personal information, which could be easily exploited.

The ROP statement said: “The Royal Oman Police warns of a fraudulent method in which fraudsters communicate with targeted persons via text messages containing job offers with a specific daily salary. They are asked to open bank accounts through which sums of money resulting from various fraud operations can be transferred and then re-transferred to external bank accounts.

“The Royal Oman Police advises everyone not to respond to these fraudulent messages and the need to report immediately when exposed to such situations.” ROP also shared a message to highlight the content of such text messages: ‘Hello, I am a Human Resources Manager and I am currently hiring for a part-time job. You can work from home using your smartphone. Part-time work takes 30-60 minutes’ Salary 20 OMR – 200 OMR per day. You must be at least 23 years old to do this job.
