The Matchmaker (Netflix)

This recent Netflix release from Saudi Arabia is truly a gem for those who love an offbeat story. The story follows Tarek, an IT worker who develops feelings for an Intern employed at his office. He follows her to a resort in the middle of a desert, where he meets a matchmaker who promises men to unite them with their ideal partner. However, the truth behind this “too good to be true” matchmaker turns out to be a dark secret tied to a tale of eternal vengeance. Fun trivia, this engrossing thriller was shot entirely at Al-‘Ula, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia.

Falling for a Killer

Yet another thriller on the list, Falling for a Killer follows a busy prosecutor Darcy Young, who comes back to her parent’s home to meet her younger sister Brea’s fiancé, Thomas Schure. However, as it turns out, the young and charismatic Thomas has a rather dark side to him, and Darcy finds him rather unnerving ever since their first encounter. When their speech-impaired maid mysteriously passes out and is taken away, Darcy reveals her suspicions about Thomas being an insurance scammer who kills rich women for money. With multiple twists and turns, Falling for a Killer is a taut thriller, which, although uses some common tropes, manages to keep the audience at the edge of their seat.

Acidman

Thomas Haden Church plays Lloyd, a reclusive man who lives in a home in the middle of nowhere searching for UFOs. He is tracked down by his daughter Maggie after a decade, who has some important news to tell him. At the heart of it, Acidman is the story of the relationship between a daughter and her estranged father as well as a beautiful exploration of a troubled psyche. If a slow-burning arthouse film is what you’re looking to watch this weekend, Acidman might be the film to go with.
