Up

A Disney movie with melancholic undertones, Up has earned critical acclaim for good reason. Even if we discount the recollections of Carl’s now-deceased wife, a sequence that has earned legendary status by now, there is still the love he develops for Russell, the eight-year-old Wilderness Explorer. Through Russell, Carl revisits his life before he became a cynical old man, and through the course of this film, their relationship develops into a grandpa-grandson duo, a dynamic that has rocked the screens from Back to the Future to Rick and Morty.

Her

Introverted and lonely writer Theodore Twombly buys an Artificial Intelligence system to help him write. However, as he explores this A.I. more, and its ability to learn, adapt, and grow, much like a real person, he helplessly falls in love. Samantha, the A.I. system, slowly fades his loneliness away, turning him from a hopeless loner to a hopeful romantic.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Although perhaps a rather offbeat pick for the self-love category, the Secret Life preaches self-worth and the moral of never giving up one’s own self. Walter Mitty is a negative assets manager at Life magazine living alone in New York, who, in order to escape the monotony of his own life, imagines romantic and action-filled scenarios. However, when his own job is threatened, he sets out on a real romantic and action-packed journey which results in his self-discovery!
