MUSCAT : The 5-day event, which is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Omani Cycling Association, will include 5 stages, traversing between Oman’s varied terrain and landscapes.
The circumnavigation path is about 830.3kms, with the first stage reaching 147.4kms. It will start on Saturday, February 11, in front of the Rustaq Castle in the Al Batinah South Governorate, and the stage will conclude in the Muscat Governorate, in front of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center. The second stage will begin on Sunday, February 12, from the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, and will conclude in the Wilayat of Quriyat, covering a distance of 174kms. The third stage will take place on the following day, starting from the Al Khobar area in the Wilayat of Sumail, and concluding in the Wilayat of Al Hamra – a distance of 151.8kms. The fourth stage will start on Tuesday from the Wilayat of Izki in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, stretching to Yiti Heights in the Muscat Governorate, for a distance of 204.9kms. The concluding stage on February 15, will cover a total distance of 152.9kms, starting from the Al-Fayhaa rest house in the Wilayat of Samail, all the way to the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar.
According to the Tour of Oman website, defending winner of the Tour of Oman, Jan Hirt returns to the Sultanate with a new team, Soudal Quick-Step, where he joins forces with his runner-up from last year, Fausto Masnada. ‘Two-time winner of the race, Alexey Lutsenko is also back at the helm of Astana Qazaqstan Team alongside Mark Cavendish, participating in his first races with the Asian team. Fastmen such as Pascal Ackermann, puncheurs like Davide Formolo and climbers as talented as Emanuel Buchmann and Cian Uijtdebroeks also eye success on the explosive course of the Muscat Classic and the demanding roads of the Tour of Oman’, it stated.

This year’s edition of the event will feature, for the first time in the history of the Tour, a new race called Muscat Classic Race, which will be held a day before the start of the Tour competitions, beginning from Al Mouj Muscat.
