The AFC Cup is the second tournament at the club level in the continent after the AFC Champions League. It was launched in 1990 under the name of the Asian Cup Winners’ Cup. The competition lasted for 12 consecutive seasons from 1990 to 2002, and the tournament stopped in 2003 after the Asian Confederation made extensive changes to club competitions, suspending old tournaments and introduced two new tournaments – the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup.
