School kids, elders throng 1st day of Oman Science Festival

The festival is touted as a national event and is expected to attract visitors from abroad this time.

MUSCAT: The 3rd Oman Science Festival under the slogan ‘Together we live the passion for science’ opened at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center here on Monday.


The six-day festival is expected to encourage students to realize the importance of science in life, urge them to innovate, enhance their skills to integrate into the knowledge-based economy and encourage them to continue learning in scientific disciplines.


The festival is also show on the Sultanate’s might in science which was inaugurated by Eng. Saeed bin Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in the presence of Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education.


Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Ambosaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education said: “This festival is a national event, as it includes those related to cyber-security, food security, energy and the environment, in addition to the participation of global institutions like the highly acclaimed International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The festival has attracted top scientists who will give lectures and seminars.”

Visitors from abroad too are expected in this third edition.


“We are calling on everyone to visit the festivals to take advantage of what it contains and interact with the participants in the festival with their activities and events,” the official said.


Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said “The Sultanate of Oman is moving on the right direction according to the vision of Oman 2040 under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. What we saw today is a phenomenon. For young men and women, the festival shows scientific models in the field of energy, renewable and sustainable energy, environment and its preservation,” the Saudi minister said while praising the Sultanate for achieving the best global position for graduates in the science, mathematics and technology innovation index.

Over 100 government, private, military and civil institutions and associations and more than 1,000 participants with at least 452 activities, interactive scientific seminars, exhibitions of innovations, experiments and competitions, lectures and discussion sessions, and a scientific theater have been envisaged.


The visitors can also watch 25 sci-fi movies and compete in various competitions like hackathons, programming, robots, and drones apart from platforms for sponsors, pavilions for innovators, memorabilia too have been scheduled.


The festival has 70 pavilions for health, education, the trade and economy, 75 scientific innovations exhibitions apart from space and aviation sciences, artificial intelligence, introducing ‘Wonders of the Universe’ and safe use of nuclear energy by IAEA all have been set up.
