MUSCAT: The Asian Amateur Chess Championship, organized by the Omani Chess Committee in cooperation with the Asian Game Federation and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, began on Thursday evening.
Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Hamidi, Head of Muscat Municipality, inaugurated the tournaments in which 197 chess players including 51 women from 20 countries will vie for top honours till Tuesday.
The tournament played on the Swiss system consists of nine rounds with 90 minutes for each player.

The Sultanate will be represented by Salem Al-Omari, Salem Shammas, Mani’ Al-Kathiri, Amin Al-Ansi, Abdul Rahman Al-Zadjali and Anas Al-Droushi in men’s category while Anaat Al-Eisa’i, Afra Al-Baloushi and Al-Anoud Al-Ghafria will play in the women’s category.
Khaled Al Hadidi, Ruqayya Al Balushi and Hamdan Al Hinai (international referees) and Ahmed Al Kharousi, Yasser Al Raisi, Alia Al Siyabiya and Khadija Al Qasimiah (referees) from Oman will oversee the tournament.
