MUSCAT: Following His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik’s Royal directives, the Muscat Municipality will implement the project that won the Bilarab bin Haitham Architectural Design Award.

“In translation of the royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to assign Muscat Municipality to implement the Muttrah Square project, winner of the first edition of the Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design, His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, patronises the signing ceremony of the project handover memorandum,” Oman News Agency (ONA) tweeted on Tuesday.

The signing confirms the award’s vision to implement the project and develop the capabilities of Omani youth by translating their designs to be civilised landmarks that serve all segments of society, and add an aesthetic touch to the selected sites with their modern and youthful designs.

The Bilarab bin Haitham Architectural Design Award is the first ever honour related to architecture and architects in the Sultanate.

“The award was instituted with the blessing from the Sultanate’s Sultan and an affirmation from His Majesty that young Omani citizens are the tools and pillars of the national building and are able to take their country progress to the ranks of developed countries,” said Ahmed Al Shukaili, member of the award committee.

The award winning team comprising architects Ahmed bin Muhammad Al Jahdami, Omaima bint Mahmoud Al Haniah, and Abdullah bin Saleh Al Bahri submitted the plan of Muttrah Square for the Belarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design.

The plan seeks to enhance the value of Muttrah with its unique landmarks, where a bridge is designed in the shape of a bird over the sea.

Inspired by the sword of Imam al-Salt bin Malik al-Kharusi, the bridge frames the famous Muttrah landmarks in one picture and is surrounded by a multi-use plaza that includes a dancing fountain, retail stores and cafes, with lights that blend with the waves of the sea.

The square is located in a privileged location in front of the Muttrah Fish Market overlooking the waterfront.
