Air India Express flight catches fire at Muscat airport, passengers evacuated

MUSCAT: An Air India Express plane caught fire before taking off at Muscat International Airport on Wednesday.

Speaking to The Arabian Stories, officials confirmed that Air India Express IX442 Boeing 737-800 was scheduled to depart to Kochi when the incident happened. “The right engine sparked fire and smoke blew from left engine on taxi way. All passengers have been evacuated immediately from the flight,” the official said.

According to officials, 141 passengers including four infants were on board and have been shifted to the terminal building.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued, CAA said “the situation is currently being dealt with by the competent authorities.”

CAA has also confirmed that “there is no impact on the safety of the airport, passengers and air traffic.”

According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation in New Delhi all passengers were safely evacuated after smoke was detected in engine no. 2 of Air India Express flight (to Kochi) on the runway at Muscat airport.

“Relief flight to be arranged. We will investigate the incident and also take appropriate action,” the statement added.
