MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education tweeted on Thursday that the statistics received from the National Center for Statistics and Information indicated a decrease in the illiteracy rate in the Sultanate of Oman, and an increase in the percentage of those who are able to read and write.
The literacy rate in the age group over 10 years was 97.26% while the literacy rate in the age group 15 years and over was 97% and the literacy rate in the age group from 15 to 45 years is 99.59%.
In a statement published on its website, the UNESCO said that a whopping 771 million people in the world still cannot read and write.

The changes that swept the world in recent years have taken a new direction, bringing more obstacles that impede progress towards global literacy. It is likely that nearly 24 million learners, including 11 million girls and young woman will not be able to resume formal education in the days of post COVID-19, according to the UNESCO report.
