MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University was named among the top higher education institutions in the world, according to the Spanish Simago classification of universities in July 2022.
The university was ranked 16th in the Arab world, 1091 globally. It was followed by the University of Nizwa standing at 3302 globally, followed by Dhofar University, then the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, followed by Suhar University, the National University of Science and Technology in Muscat, the Middle East College and Al Buraimi University College.
King Saud University topped the rankings in the Arab world, followed by King Abdulaziz University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Cairo University, and Alexandria University.

Harvard University topped the world rankings, followed by Stanford University, then Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Oxford University.
The Simago ranking is concerned with ranking universities and research centres according to a composite index, which combines 3 different indicators, based on research performance, innovation output, and societal impact.
Each major indicator includes a number of sub-indicators, provided that the institution should publish at least 100 researches in a database during the classification year.
