MUSCAT: A total of 83,753,000 tons of fish, worth OMR 36 million, was produced in Dhofar Governorate in 2021.
The small surface fish accounted for about 52 per cent while bottom fish accounted for 26 per cent of the total production in the governorate.
The number of fishermen in Dhofar reached 11,632 in 2021, in addition to those working in other fishing-related sectors such as transporting, selling fish, specialised factories, marine workshops, ports, shops selling fishing supplies and more.

The number of fishing boats in the governorate reached 4,477 boats in 2021, while the number of artisanal fishing vessels reached 79.
Engineer Rashid bin Saeed Al Ghafri, Director-General of the General Directorate of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources said, “The ministry is working to encourage the optimal use of the diverse marine resources that are abundant in the governorate to ensure its sustainability and development in accordance with the Oman 2040 vision.”
He also stressed on the importance of establishing fisheries projects and industries in the governorate that serve the local community and support the national economy. The General Directorate of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate is working to develop the sector through several projects and programs, including fish control along the coasts, and support for fishermen and workers in the fish sector.
The fisheries sector is an important element in the Governorate of Dhofar due to its diverse and rich fish wealth.
