MIRBAT : The Wilayat of Mirbat, Dhofar Governorate, hosts a new fishery project to the tune of RO 10 million for breeding Omani abalone. The project, undertaken by Oman Aquaculture Company, has a production capacity of 600 tonnes per annum.
The project’s opening ceremony was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Marwan Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, and attended by Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Shaikh Mustahail Al Ma’ashani, Adviser at the Diwan of Royal Court, and officials from the public and private sectors.
The project is part and parcel of the Ministry’s plans to encourage the private sector to take up investment diversification in the field of food security in general and fisheries projects in particular.

Dr. Saud said that the project figures among value added ventures towards the realization of the ministry’s vision for fish farming. It also serves the local community and provides jobs for Omani youth, he added.
The project covers an area of 37,240 sqm (with a construction area of 8,900 sqm) and comprises a set of facilities and services that contribute to the production of abalone at international standards.
