MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is not among the countries in the Gulf region suffering from water scarcity, a Turkish news report quoted the United Nations report.

The United Nations report has indicated that multiple countries are at risk of being affected by drought by 2040. The World Bank has attributed the reasons for this to climate change, rapid population growth, poor infrastructure, and excessive use of water resources in the agricultural sector.

The agricultural sector consumes about 80 per cent of the water resources in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has set the per capita share of fresh water at 10 per cent of the average per capita consumption, which is estimated at 1,000 cubic meters annually.

Globally, about 1.1 billion people lack access to adequate water, 2.7 billion people will experience water scarcity for one month of the year, and two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages by 2025.
