MUSCAT: The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has issued an alert for a tropical depression located in the Arabian Sea.

According to the latest weather maps and analysis by the centre, the tropical depression is located northeast of the Arabian sea near the coastal areas of India (Gujarat) at latitude 23 N and a longitude of 67 E.

The wind speed around the depression’s centre is estimated between 17 to 27 knots and it is likely to move north-westward towards the coastal areas of the Oman Sea within the coming two days with a chance of dissipating near the Pakistan-Iran coasts, the centre said.

The impact of the depression is expected to affect the Sultanate of Oman gradually on Sunday and continue for the next three days.

Clouds advection over most of the Sultanate of Oman governorates with chances of rain showers with different intensities over South Al Sharqiya, North Al Sharqiya, and parts of Muscat and Al Wusta governorates between 10 to 40 mm.

– Decrease in horizontal visibility during heavy rainfall

The impact of the depression will start gradually extend to the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta with varying rainfall between 30-80mm with cloud cover over the Sultanate of Oman with isolated rain over parts of Muscat, North Al Shargiyah, Al Dhaklia, South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahira, Al Buraimi governorates between 10-30mm.

The Civil Aviation Authority has advised residents to take precautions during rain and avoid approaching flooded wadis. It has also cautioned the people to check the visibility and sea state before sailing and follow the issued weather bulletins and reports.
