MUSCAT: Oman denounced on Monday statements made by the suspended spokeswoman of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) insulting Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

The foreign ministry Undersecretary Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy met His Excellency Amit Narang, the Ambassador of India on Monday and expressed Sultanate’s condemnation of the offensive statements about Prophet Mohammed.

“The Sultanate of Oman expresses its condemnation of the offensive statements about the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), Islam and Muslims made by an official of the Bharatiya Janata Party. This came during a meeting of Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Diplomatic Affairs, with Amit Narang, the Ambassador of the Republic of India to the Sultanate of Oman,” Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

The BJP on Sunday suspended Nupur Sharma in response to comments she made during a TV debate about the Prophet Mohammed.

Sharma’s comments prompted protest from several other countries, including Qatar and Kuwait.
