Municipal councils play crucial role in Oman’s development

MUSCAT: The Omani Renaissance, led by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has given special attention to the development aspect of all the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman and the expansion of community participation to develop this aspect, most notably the election of members of municipal councils.

The legislation and regulations issued to develop the work of municipal councils from the Municipal Councils Law or the Provincial System and Municipal Affairs are among what Oman Vision 2040 has achieved so far in the national priority related to the development of the governorates.

The lofty directives of His Majesty the Sultan during his various meetings with the sheikhs in the Sultanate of Oman were to raise the amounts allocated to the governorate development program from OMR 10 million to OMR 20 million for each governorate during the years of the current five-year plan (2021-2025).

Starting this year, implementing development projects in addition to the projects approved in the tenth five-year plan (2021/2025) with more than OMR 650 million to be implemented during the remaining years of the current five-year plan on various development sectors.

By increasing the financial liquidity for the development budget allocations this year, an amount of OMR 200 million, bringing the total amounts allocated for disbursement to OMR 1.1 billion, an incentive for the competitive comparative advantages of the governorates, the development of their economy, and the scope of the programs and projects it intends to implement.

The high commissioning of the governors to present an annual implementation plan to the concerned authorities on how to exploit these allocations confirms the supreme keenness to set a framework for the government to implement the various projects within the governorates.

The Ministry of Interior has announced the start of registration in the electoral register for the elections of municipal council members for the third term through the elections website (elections.om).

This is an important step to exercise the right to vote and to select qualified members who represent the governorate in its municipal council with two members from each state in addition to the members others appointed in their job capacities who represent 7 government service institutions and two people of advice and opinion from the people of the governorate.

The municipal councils were also entrusted with “approving the establishment of cultural, entertainment and tourism festivals, following up on the implementation of service and development projects in the governorate, proposing projects related to the development of the governorate’s cities and tourist destinations, and studying social issues and negative phenomena in the governorate.”
