MUSCAT: The US State Department has emphasised that the Sultanate of Oman has played an important role in helping the United States to achieve its broad goals of promoting stability and prosperity in the region.

In a new report published on its website, it said that the Sultanate of Oman is strategically located on a major sea crossing, through which 30% of the world’s offshore oil shipments pass.

The report also added that Oman’s long-standing partnership with the United States is critical to achieving their common goals, including increasing economic diversification and development opportunities, promoting regional stability, and combating terrorism.

“Demonstrating commitment to our security cooperation remains important, in the context of Oman’s goals to promote regional stability and end the conflict in Yemen,” the report read.

The United States and the Sultanate of Oman concluded a Treaty of Friendship and Navigation in 1833, which was replaced in 1958 by the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations and Consular Rights, and the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1972.

The report further stated that the two countries signed a free trade agreement, which increased trade in both directions and it also created opportunities for American and Omani companies, and supported Oman’s goals of attracting investment and diversifying its economy.

The total bilateral trade between the United States and the Sultanate of Oman amounted to more than 3.2 billion dollars in 2021.

US exports to Oman include vehicles, aircraft, engines, and industrial machinery, while US imports from Oman include industrial supplies, bauxite, aluminium, fertilisers, jewellery , plastics and fuel oil.
