MUSCAT: More and more women are getting behind the wheels of cars in the country. If facts and figures are to be believed, the number of women getting driving licence in the Sultanate has grown significantly.
According to the data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), a total of 339,000 driving licences were issued in 2021 of which 48.2% are women holding “new driving licences.”
Speaking to The Arabian Stories, a senior Royal Oman Police (ROP) official also said there has been an increase in the number of women seeking driving licences in the last few years. “Every year, there’s an increase in the number of women approaching me to join driving classes, said Huda Al Hashmi, who has been running a driving school in Seeb for the past five years.
“I feel more comfortable driving my own car especially while going to work and shopping,” said Maryam Al Harthy, an account executive working in a private sector firm.
According to NCSI, more than 1.55 million vehicles were registered in the country by the end of December 2021.
