MUSCAT: While the peace negotiations are still continuing between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian invasion is going on unabated, making life miserable for the common people.

Despite the looming threat of international isolation over its invasion of Ukraine, the Putin regime is adamantly moving ahead in an effort to conquer Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged the West to consider a no-fly zone for Russian aircraft over Ukraine in the backdrop of the bomb attack by Russia, which caused tremendous damage to the military as well as civilians lives.

According to Alla Berest, an aviation professional based in Boryspil, the situation is despicable and civilian life has also been affected in the 29 km east of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. She said, “Russian troops are fighting not only against the army, but they are fighting against civilian population as well. They are bombing not only infrastructure but also homes of people.”

While many have already fled the country, a large chunk of the population still continue to live in Ukraine by taking refuge in places like metro stations and other shelters. In many places, the roads are deserted and rubbles after the bombing reflect the inexplicable situation in the country.

Though the Russian side claims that the civilian life would not be affected, people are being killed in the attack. In the latest tragedy, an Indian medical student was been killed in the bombing. The victim has been identified as Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar (20), from Karnataka. He was a fourth-year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University. He was killed by the shelling in Kharkiv, proving the fact that Russia’s claim of not attacking civilian areas is far from the truth.

Despite the odds, the Ukraine authorities are taking all measures to provide the basic amenities to the people while the bombing deafens those who continue to exist in the area. Even after the invading forces targeted the infrastructure, internet service and electricity supply have not been affected in most parts of the region.

People are finding it difficult to survive in the places like metro stations owing to the fearsome situation and the extremity of the weather, according to Alla Berest. In the wake of the war, the availability of milk products has dropped and the window for shopping is limited.

Despite the peace negotiations, the situation continues to be gruesome, according to the aviation professional. “If you are not in Ukraine, that does not mean you are safe. This is not only a war against one country; it is a war against humankind. Believe me, war is a horror,” said Alla Berest whilst the situation in Ukraine is far from being peaceful.
