Oman’s Minister of Finance issues decision related to motor insurance fund

The decision was based on the Motor Vehicle Insurance Law issued to establish a fund to aid the injured with physical injuries and the heirs of the deceased.

MUSCAT: In what could be a major breakthrough, HE Sultan bin Salem Al Habsi, Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Capital Market Authority (CMA) has issued a decision to amend some provisions of the system of the Assured Fund for the assistance of persons who suffer physical injuries, heirs of the deceased and to compensate for material damage in the wake of vehicle accidents.

According to the decision, the value of the material damages claim, should not be less than OMR 500 and in case of treatment or first aid expenses, the total value should not be less than OMR 500. The decision also state that there should be a contact or relation between the vehicles causing the accident and the injured. 

The decision issued on Sunday also explained that the heirs of the deceased or injured or their agents must submit a request for assistance or compensation to the committee as per a specific form prepared. 

Following documents must be attached with the application form.

1.     A copy of the final report issued by the Royal Oman Police of the accident.

2.     A copy of the medical report issued by the Ministry of Heath.

3.     A copy of the bills for treatment and first aid expenses from a hospital in the Sultanate.

4.     A copy of the death certificate for the deceased as a result of the accident, a copy of the legal agency representing their heirs.

5.     A copy of the power of attorney in case the request is submitted through an agent.
