MUSCAT: The French company ENGIE has confirmed its aspiration to establish green hydrogen projects in the Sultanate of Oman.
“ENGIE is looking at green hydrogen projects in Oman, the largest oil producer in the Middle East outside of OPEC, and in Egypt and Morocco, two cost-benefiting countries,” Frédéric Claux, managing director of heat and supply for Asia, Middle East and Africa at ENGIE, said in an interview published by Standard & Poor’s (S&P).
He stated that the company currently owns about 2 gigawatts of renewable projects in the Middle East and North Africa, and wants to double this number by 2030 as part of a global goal to obtain 80 gigawatts of renewable energy sources by 2030, up from about 35 gigawatts currently.

He added that the company plans to bid for renewable projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, to help double its production in the Middle East and North Africa.
The Belgian Demi Group set up the strategic project HYPORT Duqm for the production of green hydrogen in partnership with OQ.
