MUSCAT : HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al-Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, yesterday launched a book titled “Date Palms in Omani Cultural Heritage”.
The book launch, held at Sayyid Faisal Bin Ali Museum at the Ministry’s premises in Al-Khuwair, comes as part of a project to collect Omani narrative history.
Speaking at a press statement, HH Sayyid Theyazin said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth incorporated the promotion of Omani cultural identity within its priorities for the forthcoming stage in line Oman Vision 2040 approaches. He stressed the importance of the book, which he described as a scholarly research in documenting knowledge, engendering cultural identity in society, deepening cultural thinking and enriching communication between Omanis and other peoples of the world.

The Ministry’s resolve to document Omani narrative history stems from a conviction to promote the skills and knowledge that enriched social and economic life in the Sultanate and played a role in grooming Omani citizen, said HH Sayyid Theyazin, adding that such action will encourage innovation and creativity in different cultural domains and inspire Omani youth to utilize their potential in rebuilding Oman.

“Date Palms in Omani Cultural Heritage” is based on tales told by narrators to document oral history and ethics associated with Omani civilization. The aim is to preserve the patrimony passed down from the ancestors to the successive generations, lest it might be lost once its proponents cease to exist.
The project undertaken by the Ministry is informed by the rich cultural diversity of Omani society across the Sultanate’s governorates. It has contributed to revitalizing cultural thought and instilled an earnest desire in Omani researchers to provide the Sultanate’s library with the best contemporary cultural studies.
Authored by Dr. Mas’oud al-Hadhrami and Ahmed al-Azizi, “Date Palms in Omani Cultural Heritage” is published in two volumes exploring various definitions and interpretations based around references to the date palm in the Holy Quran and its significance in traditional industries throughout the history of Oman and other nations around the globe.
